With 100% Copenhagen at The Museum of Copenhagen Maja Nydal Eriksen is showing 100 neutral and staged portraits of 100 people that statistically represent a demographic profile of Copenhagen. Each participant is chosen according to six statistical criteria from census data: sex, age, ethnicity, family composition, residential location and socioeconomic status.
The neutral portraits give an overview of the standpoints of the 100 citizens regarding political, social and personal issues. Set up as collages the 100 portraits show the faces behind the traditionally, anonymos statistical surveys.
The staged portraits go a layer deeper. Here everyone are asked, what statement defines them as a person and sets them apart from the mass. By working closely with the participants, their individual statements are transformed into staged portraits, showing an important part of their identity.
The portraits address taboos and prejudgehs and are all accompanied by a personal text. As a hole the series make up an allegory and historical document of what concern the ordinary Copenhagener in 2014. – An alternative story of the city, that statistics cannot deliver.
Over the duration of 100 days, two new portraits were hung on the museum wall, and placed as a double page magazine spread, that turned into a document of the diversity of Copenhagen. At the end of the 100 days the exhibition opened officially, with the 100 people as "living portraits" infiltrating the museum space. Additionally the portraits were shown in print, and as large-scale projections, in the 10 different neighbourhoods of Copenhagen.
100% Copenhagen was originally a documentary theatre, presented at The Royal Theatre in august 2013 by the german directing collective Rimini Protokoll. Produced by Copenhagen International Theatre and The Royal Theatre.
